2024 Fall Recap: SAC 1st Soccer takes two titles and 20 wins

In 2024, St. Andrew's College 1st Soccer were crowned CISAA (Regional) Champions and CAIS (National) Champions, claiming the 'cup double' for the first time in a decade.

In the regional playoffs, the Saints slipped past Upper Canada College 2-1 in the quarterfinal and topped De La Salle College 4-1 in the semifinal, before putting in one of their best team efforts of the season in the league final. When it mattered most, SAC were at their very best and did not allow a single shot on target as they cruised to a well-earned 3-0 win at Appleby College to claim the 2024 CISAA crown.

On home soil at the CAIS National Championship, the Saints outscored their opponents 15-3 in six straight wins to grab the title. It was also sweet revenge for SAC in the national final as they topped Crescent School 2-1, the same squad they fell to 1-0 in last year's national title game.

The St. Andrew's College 20-win season also included some individual statistical standouts, led by forward Jayden Walters '26 (Jamaica) who had a team-high 24 goals, while adding 6 assists. Winger Josh Henriques '26 (Jamaica) topped the squad with 11 assists, while adding 7 goals, with co-captain Seb Madeiros '25 (Bermuda) chipping in with 5 goals and 8 assists.

The last line of defence for the Saints was 'new boy' goalkeeper Robert Barkman '26 (Oakville, Ontario), who earned 10 clean-sheets and a whopping 4 assists.

Honourable mention also goes out to midfielder Merek Husack '27 (Calgary, Alberta) who was rock in the middle of the park, while defender Michael Madeiros '27 (Bermuda) really stepped up in the post-season with his tenacity and 1v1 defending.?
Congratulations as well to our individual award winners.

Our 2024 Most Valuable Player award went to centre back and co-captain Thierry Johnston '25 (Jamaica). Thierry was the only player on our entire roster to not register a single goal or assist all season. Reason being, he was too busy doing his job! He was our ball winner, our anchor in defence who cleaned up almost every mess we made as a group – and each and every week he took another huge leap forward with his voice and as a leader.
Our Most Improved Player award was earned by forward Nolan Martin '25 (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland). Nolan's energy, commitment and 'leadership by example' completely changed the way we played and defended as a group. He was also a steady pair of feet in attack as he collected 3 goals and 4 assists, including the goal to seal our CISAA crown.

And a huge thank you and congratulations goes out to our graduating seniors. What a way to end your SAC career with a 20-win season and a pair of titles. Thanks again to: Faris Al-Hinai (Oman), Jordan Bragoli (Quebec City, Quebec), Zachary Brook (Vancouver, British Columbia), Joe Duke (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland), Nolan Martin (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland), Oliver Poulos (Toronto, Ontario), Matvey Semochkin (Russia), Reza Ziai (Bermuda), and our co-captains Thierry Johnston (Jamaica) and Sebastian Madeiros (Bermuda).

As Canada's only full-time soccer program at a CAIS boarding school, St. Andrew's College continued to hit the pitch after their CISAA and CAIS titles.

The Saints finished November with a pair of showcase events in both the USA and Canada and in December, moved their program indoors, which includes ramping up both their strength and conditioning work and speed training.

There's so much more to come from the 2024-25 version of SAC 1st Soccer in the new year!
