St. Andrew's College 1st Soccer dropped a 5-3 decision to visiting St. Michael's College School in Friday's conference semifinals and will go in search of redemption this weekend in Albany, NY, where they'll play four matches at the Can-Am Showcase.
The Saints got off to a slow start in the semis, but responded well to St. Mike's first two scores. Down 1-0 in the opening 15 minutes, left winger
Grayson Coburn '24 zipped down the flank and cut a ball back for captain
Issa Abdu ' 24. His shot was stopped, but the Saint's leading scorer, Josh Henriques '26, tapped home to tie.
The visitors jumped back in front early in the second half, but a Seb Maderios '25 through ball found Abdu once again and he made no mistake with a tidy left-footed finish.
The Saints continued to chase the game, down 4- 2, and a
Pax Cortizas '26 penalty brought SAC back to within one with eight minutes to play. However, as the Saints pressed for the equalizer, St. Mike's put the game out of reach on the counter.
On Wednesday, the Saints earned their spot in the semifinals with a confident 6-2 win over Trinity College. Henriques buried a hat trick versus the visiting Bears, with Cortizas,
Jordan Bragoli '25 and
Reza Ziai '25 notching singles.
The 2023 fall season wraps up south of the border this weekend, with SAC 1st Soccer tangling with four quality opponents in front a host of NCAA coaches.
Go Saints!
