1st Hockey splits with Shattuck St. Mary's

#1 Seeds in Canada and USA do battle over the weekend

Game 1:     SAC 2                  Shattuck St. Mary's 4
The campus was buzzing on Friday night with the Saints welcoming the Prep Hockey Conference (PHC) 1st place and #1 ranked team in the United States, Shattuck St. Mary's of Minnesota to campus for the first PHC home action of the season. The teams started fast and hard trading early powerplay chances to no avail. The deadlock wouldn't be broken until the middle of the second period as a sharp angle shot from Nolam Caffey caught SAC goaltender Liam Furey by surprise. The Saints would quickly answer back with a goal from Dean Letourneau on the doorstep to even the score. Shattuck would regain the lead with under two minutes left in the 2nd from a tip out front from Aiden Park after a miscued breakout. The third period was some great hockey with Shattuck St. Mary's doing a outstanding job neutralizing the Saints powerplays. It wasn't until the final couple minutes of the 3rd period that SSM converted on a powerplay of their own to stretch the score to 3-1. It wasn't over though, as the Saints answered almost immediately off a nice passing play from Jack Good to Dean Letourneau to give the large crowd in attendance a frantic final couple minutes. In the end the visitors found the back of the empty net to claim a 4-2 win in a spirited, entertaining match-up.

Game 2:     SAC 7                  Shattuck St. Mary's 4
Saturday morning's fixture opened the worst possible way for the home team looking to avoid the weekend sweep. SSM opened the scoring 1:30 into the game from a miscue in the defensive zone to go up 1-0. To their credit the Saints dug in and start to exert their pace and offensive game on the visitors. Dean Letourneau, who was a force all weekend, evened the score for the Saints off a nice feed from Michael Dec at the conclusion of a powerplay. The second period is where the Saints put their foot on the gas pedal outpacing Shattuck 4-1 to blow the game open. Powerplay goals from Letourneau and Tyler Chiovetti were well executed, and that phase of the game proved to be the difference in both games on the weekend. Jack Good finished off a beautiful passing play with Letourneau on a 2v2 and then Letourneau completed the hat trick before the end of the second period to have the Saints leading 5-2 after two frames. The third period was a battle of attrition, with the Saints organized defending and a spectacular goaltending performance of Paolo Frasca, keeping the frantic and intense Shattuck attack at bay. Insurance goals from Nic Ferrante with a nice finish in front of goal, and Kieren Dervin into the empty, sealed the important three points in PHC play for SAC but also a displayed the their resilience with a short bench to get the job done after losing game one.
BOXSCORE
