SUDBURY, Ont. – A third period tally from St. Andrew's Saints defenceman Charlie Sullivan was the difference maker in helping lead his side by the Timmins Rock 3-2 Wednesday at the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase, presented by the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
While it was St. Andrew's who generated the majority of chances early on, it was Timmins who opened the scoring midway through the first frame.
On the tally, the Rock broke out of their own zone quickly in transition that led to Brant Romaniuk chipping one over the pad of Saints starter Noah La Gambina, following a passing play with Diego Da Silva and Kaeden McArthur.
Some continued sustained pressure led St. Andrew's to eventually solving Timmins netminder Frédéric Cousineau when Andy Huang skated along the blueline before putting an attempt to the target that was knocked in by Nate Feiner battling in front at 17:47.
Heading to the second stanza, the Rock went back in front early on as Da Silva shovelled a pass up that allowed McArthur to go right in on La Gambina and lift in a shot after moving to his left that found its way in.
A shorthanded breakaway by Romaniuk gave the NOJHL squad a chance to add to their lead, but he was denied by the glove of the Saints' stopper.
Adding another equalizer near the midway point of the proceedings, Ryan Murray found an open Feiner alone at the top of crease where the St. Andrew's forward propelled a backhand by Cousineau.
Taking their first lead in the contest, Saints' defenceman Charlie Sullivan fired a shot through traffic from the top of the left circle that managed to find its way in, with teammate Jake Di Capo vying for position in front, with just over eight minutes to play.
Getting Cousineau out for an extra attacker deep in regulation, Timmins pushed to knot the affair in an effort to try and force overtime.
However, despite some chances, St. Andrew's held the fort defensively to pull out the narrow triumph.
Earning player of the game nods were Feiner and Cousineau.
