I cannot say enough about how well our lads handled themselves today.
Although far from perfect, it was our best game of the season and an incredibly close match. We lost by a single unconverted try after having the ball called held-up in goal. Despite several non-rugby moments, our boys were classy in a defeat that, but for a few errant passes and decisions, could easily have been a very different outcome.
A beautiful breakout run from
Lucas Prud'homme went 60m through 4 would-be tacklers for the first score.
Nantus Baard picked the ball off the back of a well-formed driving maul and scampered in the the second score. And with minutes remaining, the forwards smashed the line with
Tiger Wu crashing across to bring us within reach. But it was not to be as time expired on your Saints 2024 season.
A special shout-out to Captain
Malcolm Austgarden who showed us what real sportsmanship looks like: after a clumsy and dangerous tackle on him that saw his opponent sent off, Malcolm made a point of walking over and shaking hands, letting his tackler know that he regarded it as an accident with no hard feelings. Then, at the end of a long day, Malcolm was the guy going around pushing all the chairs in after the team left the dinner table.
A disappointing finish as we know we could have picked this one off, but the challenge of taking on something difficult is why we play.
Well done lads, we are proud of you!
