SAC returned to the Tropical 7s Tournament in Tampa, Florida for the first time since 2018. It's gotten much bigger now with hundreds of teams in attendance from across North America and around the world.
Day 1 results:
SAC 26 - 10 MacDowell Rugby (BC)
Gabe Cabelli scored all four tries off some impressive footwork and pace! (20 pts)
Malcolm Austgarden - three converts (6 pts)
SAC 10 - 5 Cayman Rugby
Austgarden (5 pts)
Cabelli (5 pts)
- the best rugby moment of the day saw Malcolm execute a spectacular ruck clean-out, pick the ball, and set up Gabe's try.
SAC 0 - 22 TOA Rugby (Idaho)
TOA was a well-organized squad with strong rucking and defensive structure. Despite this we nearly broke them several times - a perfect kick-pass from Gabe to Charlie being called back a metre offside, while sideline breaks from Terry and Cole were caught by well-positioned sweepers.
After a solid first day, SAC just missed the playoffs but the team is getting better each game.Â
Day 2
SAC 5 - 0 NL Rock B (Newfoundland)
Gabe Cabelli again showed himself to be one of the best steppers in the tournament.
SAC 10 - 21 NCYRU (North Carolina)
SAC played well but a few critical mistakes were capitalized on nicely by NC. Tries again from Gabe and team captain,
Malcolm Austgarden.
SAC 15 - 5 Faith Academy (Florida)
Gabe gave lessons in evasion while Malcolm gave a lesson in willpower: carrying three defenders from the 22m line to score an epic reach-over try.
Congrats to
Gabe Cabelli for earning our player of the tournament (9 tries over 6 matches!) - and congrats to the whole squad for a 10th place finish out of 24 in our division.
This tournament was an awesome pre-season experience: we got better every game, bonded as a team, and provided critical playing time and game experience. We return to the great white North looking to build a championship 15s team.
