Drake Porter '16 started his journey at St. Andrew's College in Grade 6, and following in his brother Chris' footsteps, Drake transitioned into the goaltender position in his first season of U14 Lacrosse. This is often regarded as the most challenging position in the sport and essential to a team's success. Drake continued growing as a competitor in Middle School and smoothly transitioned to Junior Varsity Lacrosse in Grade 9. With the graduation of star goalie Nick Fournier '13, Drake was thrust into the limelight of First Lacrosse in Grade 10.
Drake played two years of First Lacrosse for Mr. Reid and Mr. Commisso. In addition, he joined his St. Andrew's coaches and teammates in playing for the Newmarket Redbirds U19 Lacrosse team for two seasons. Over these two years, Drake managed to take significant steps as a goaltender and begin to amass a string of impressive accomplishments. Drake was named to the All-Ontario OJMFLL roster alongside SAC teammate Julian Smith-Voudouris '16.
After a successful Grade 11 year, Drake committed to perennial NCAA Division 1 powerhouse Syracuse University on a lacrosse scholarship. While at St. Andrew's, Drake was on the Head of School's Honour Roll every term and was a vital Pipes & Drums Corps member.
"I look back on my six years at St. Andrew's and realize how crucial those years were for my development. The lessons I learned, on and off the turf, prepared me for my time in the NCAA and professional/international ranks. As an Old Boy, I could not be more excited about the program's direction under Head Coach Joe Commisso. It has been incredible to watch the program thrive and win CISAA Championships, an accomplishment I could never knock off my personal bucket list. Most importantly, since graduating, it has been a pleasure to meet and interact with the great young men within the program and watch their successful athletic and professional careers unfold." Says Drake, reflecting on his time at St. Andrew's.
Drake made the tough decision to leave St. Andrew's, the school he loved to attend IMG Academy for his Grade 12 year, where he found great success in leading them to a 14-1 record. Drake was given the opportunity to represent his country as a member of the Team Canada U-19 Lacrosse team. "It was an honour to put on the maple leaf every day we competed," said Drake, who was ecstatic about being a part of the team despite losing 14-13 in the World U19 Championship game.
At Syracuse, Drake was named the starting goaltender in his Junior, Senior and 5
th year. Continuing his pattern of hard work and dedication, Drake was named an All-American and All-ACC selection in both 2019 and 2020.
After graduating from Syracuse, Drake went on to represent Team Canada at the World Games in Alabama in 2022, where the team won the gold medal after defeating Team USA in the Championship game.
Drake currently plays professional lacrosse in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) for the Atlas Lacrosse Club. Drake is also the goalie coach for the Messiah University Lacrosse team (NCAA DIII) and continues to inspire and train youth goalies with Goaliesmith.
We look forward to watching Drake's continued success!
