In front of a capacity crowd on Yuill Field, the 1st Football Saints faced great adversity to overcome a late fourth quarter deficit to take home the victory 23-17 in overtime against St. Michael's College.
SAC opened the scoring in the 1st quarter with a calculated 55-yard drive capped off by a 5-yard TD pass from
Dylan Kress to
Felix Auger. St. Mike's found a way to answer with a double pass trick play in the 2nd quarter and then a field goal to make the score 9-6 at halftime.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the 2nd half, with SAC receiver
Gabriel Cabelli making a highlight reel catch in the corner of the endzone. St. Mike's answered with a long TD drive, giving them a 3-point lead with just under 2 minutes to play in the 4th quarter.
SAC began the game's final drive from their own 30-yard line and engineered a 55-yard drive led by some tough running by QB
Dylan Kress and great receptions by
Felix Auger and
Rocky Tavernese. With no time on the clock, SAC lined up for the game-tying field goal, and
Spencer Haslett put it right through the uprights to send the game into overtime.
The OT shootout was one to remember! St. Mike's got possession first on the 35-yard line and faced a 3rd down and 4. They chose to attempt a field goal and missed wide right and Charles Bernier was ready to catch the ball and return the missed field goal to try and win the game, but an inadvertent whistle from the official stopped the play. St. Mike's was given another opportunity to replay the 3rd down and our SAC defence rose to the challenge and stopped them just short of the line.
The SAC offence then took the field for their possession at the 35-yard line, and three plays later,
Dylan Kress took the QB sneak and crossed the goal line to win the game!
